Do you wait until your baby seems sleepy to put them down?

I worry that waiting for sleepy cues to start bedtime routine may make them far too sleepy come time to put them down. When you actually put your baby to bed are they displaying signs of sleepiness such as yawning, eye rubbing, etc.
